Starting My Sixth Year: Reflections on the First Half of Term
The first half of this term has been a blend of challenges and excitement. Balancing studies, extracurriculars, and social life was tricky, but I managed to find a rhythm. Amidst all the hustle, I’ve had some truly memorable experiences. HSI has been supportive during my time in Ireland. My advisor, Chiara, has been incredible. She regularly checks in with me once a month, offering academic guidance and helping arrange accommodations. Her support has made this journey much smoother and more enriching.
Midterm Break Adventures with My Host Family
Two weeks ago, we had a midterm break, which I spent with a host family. My host mother is incredibly kind, and we've developed a lovely bond. I particularly enjoy our conversations over dinner after a long day. She also has a cat named Belle, who has quickly become my best friend here.
Despite the break, I kept up with some study sessions, though I made sure not to overdo it—it’s important to recharge, especially with the fast pace of school life.
Celebrating Halloween and Learning About Irish Traditions
During the break, I visited a friend’s house, where we carved pumpkins to celebrate Halloween. Did you know that Halloween originates from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain? This festival, celebrated in Ireland and Scotland, marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It was believed that the boundary between the earthly world and the Otherworld was more porous at this time, allowing spirits to roam the earth.
Before carving, we researched designs extensively to decide on the perfect ones. Carving the pumpkins was both simple and hard work. We cleaned out the insides to make space for candles, then drew our designs. I decided to carve a cat. It was a wonderful experience, creating fun memories with my friends.

Now, as I sit in my room back at the school residence, I’m taking a moment to reflect on the highlights of this term so far.
Higher Options Education Expo: Exploring My Future
One major highlight was our trip to the Higher Options event at the RDS Main Hall, organized by The Irish Times. As the largest education expo in Ireland, it was an incredible opportunity to explore higher education and career options. We visited various college booths, attended professional talks, and received valuable advice on planning our futures.
The event added a sense of urgency and excitement about the future, making it all feel closer and more real.

Intercultural Day: Honouring Cultural Traditions at School
Intercultural Day at my school was a wonderful celebration of the diverse cultures within our community. In the morning, we had a special assembly where I joined a few other students in presenting traditional clothing from our respective cultures.
I proudly showcased my kimono, sharing its history and explaining the special occasions when it is traditionally worn. Another student also presented their kimono, and together we highlighted the significance of this attire in our culture. Other students shared insights about the materials used in their traditional clothing and the events or activities for which these outfits are typically worn.
I felt honoured to wake up early, prepare, and represent my culture during this vibrant celebration. To mark the end of such a special day, a double rainbow appeared, and I couldn’t resist having an impromptu photo shoot to capture the moment.

Extracurricular Activities: Embracing the Model United Nations Experience
Outside of academics, I’ve been actively involved in extracurriculars. I’m a member of the Model United Nations (MUN) club, where we debate issues just like in the real UN.
Last month, I attended a conference at a nearby boys' school as part of the SOCHUM (Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian) Committee. It was a fantastic experience discussing global issues, wearing formal attire, and meeting students from other schools.
I also attended another conference in Croydon, London, where I again participated in SOCHUM. Most recently, I had the opportunity to chair a MUN at another school. Chairing was a new and rewarding experience that I found even more enjoyable than debating itself.

Looking Ahead: Goals for the Second Half of Term
Overall, it’s been a challenging but rewarding start to my sixth year and final year of studying abroad in Ireland. I’m excited to see what the rest of the year brings and to continue building on the experiences and memories I’ve already made.
