State boarding schools provide a lower cost alternative to private boarding schools. Tuition is funded by the UK government and the boarding house is privately funded.
Places at state boarding schools are very limited. If you have a student who is interested in studying at a UK state boarding school, it is highly recommended that their application is submitted as early as possible.
Originally set up to accommodate the children of British service men and women, state boarding schools receive direct funding from the government for the tuition of their students. There are only a small number of these schools in the UK, so naturally competition for entry is fierce. Schools are not selective and have an academic and vocational focus, catering for students of all abilities.
Class sizes in state boarding schools will be bigger than in the private schools, with between 25 – 30 students per class, but the standard of teaching will still be high and students will still receive the support they need to achieve the best grades they can.
Living accommodation will be comfortable and students will have their own sleeping area with space to study. Junior students will tend to be accommodated in larger dormitory-style rooms, with more senior students sharing with just one or two other students.
